Hoof spa--Hannah (2 year old Arabian) checking out the new footbath after I'd filled it with water. I did this after reading Strasser's book!
This is Chil, my 17 year old Angloarab. This
is the first time he hasn't had shoes in 10 years. When I bought him, they
always used shoes with full pads and borium studs. I've been riding him in a
wide web shoe, no pads for 7 years. Here's our go at barefoot. Look how
contracted he is!
Hoof breaking off around the nail holes.
Do you see that bit of heel on the left that seems to be higher and laid over?
Shouldn't that be trimmed off?
Lazer--this is my yearling. He had an injury
last year, and was in a wrap for weeks. It healed up well but he now has
developed too steep an angle (club feet) on the front. My farrier says it's due
to the injury (not sure about that.) When he trimmed his heels, he left his frog
protruding quite a bit past the level of the heels. From reading other posts
shouldn't it be trimmed also?
Sorry, for the poor picture (the focus is off.) I was trying to show how much
his frog is protruding past the level of the heels.
Nicka--The farrier pointing out his horribly
underrun (bent over) heels. 2 weeks after shoes were pulled.
This is the BEFORE picture on Nick's feet. Shoes had been pulled about 2 weeks
earlier.
This is another BEFORE picture of Nick's feet. That is 2 weeks after pulling
shoes and immediately before his first "natural" trim.
This is the AFTER of the very first trim.

Nick--this is my QH Nick. He developed severe
cracks with shoes on. He has chronic laminitis and has been wearing shoes for
the past 3 years. This was the 3rd trim after pulling his shoes. The cracks were
all the way at the coronet when the shoes were pulled. Note how much growth
there is after only 5 weeks.
His bars were completely laid over and had to be cut out. He hobbles around but
is getting better daily.

Sham--this is Sham my 11 year old Arabian.
First time barefoot in about 6 years. Look at the "waves" in his coronet.

This was after taking a HUGE amount of toe off, and you can see how long they
still are.
