Boot Swap Page
--find a buyer for boots you got in the wrong size!

Boots are a temporary fix, and not an ideal substitute for bare hooves that have gradually adapted to hard, rocky ground.  There are necessarily going to be trade-offs and compromises in any boot.  Leaving them on for days at a time can create other problems, such as thrush and softening of the hooves.  Poor boot fit can create rubbing problems, etc.  I see them as useful for being able to work horses on surfaces they have not yet acclimated to, such as horses living on soft surfaces wearing boots to enable working them on gravel roads.  Boots also have value in some rehabs, especially in cases of sole penetration.  Soaking boots have a place in replicating daily exposure of hooves to water that horses living in the wild get when they stand in streams to drink.  Soaking boots can also be used to medicate conditions such as thrush.

If you are relying on boots year after year in order to ride at all, though, something needs to be reevaluated.

Jaime Jackson's "Paddock Paradise" has many great ideas on how to house a horse to help him adapt to firm, rocky terrain, and how to set up your home turnout area in a way to encourage more movement.

Xenophen's "The Art of Horsemanship," a classic dating from an era when barefoot Greek cavalry horses were routinely performing amazing feats of endurance by today's standards, has some interesting observations on how to toughen the feet up.  He actually recommends that they spend several hours a day on fist-sized rounded rocks to toughen up both their hooves and legs.  There are many other interesting tips on training, working and caring for horses.  These ideas are well worth considering when you think about how much longer their horses lived, and how much longer they could remain in hard work...than our horses today.

I have had to discontinue making this an online interactive
page because it was getting over 1000 spams a day.

I apologize that this is less convenient, but the spams were increasing exponentially.

To submit an entry, Download Form,
print it, fill it out, and then snail mail it to me...
OR open it, type in your answers, and
EMAIL IT TO ME.

New entries will be added manually to the boot swap page daily
from entries I get back via snail mail or email.

To change your ad, or to take it down, please EMAIL ME.

You cannot take your ad down yourself; you need to notify me
so I can take it down.
Your ad can stay up as long as you need it to--
even years--but I do periodically check to see if the ads are current.

Please note:  shipping costs may be additional for these listings.  Please work this out with your seller.

I am providing this page to help boot buyers and sellers connect as a free public service.  I am not responsible for the conduct of the buyers or sellers, nor for the quality of the merchandise.  I don't personally know the majority of the people who advertise here.

However, a LOT of people have used this page very successfully to buy or sell boots!  Some comments...

"Just wanted you to know both the size 5 and 6 boots were sold.  Thanks so much for the use of your web site--it allowed me to sell them and not lose $250.00!"

"Thank you so much for the use of this facility.  I have bought a pair of boots using these ads.  Many thanks for the service--it is much appreciated, and I will use it again (also told my friends!)"--UK user

"Again, can't thank you enough for the website you provide. The boots sold--after what, four days on your site? The receiver received them today.... thank you. What a thoughtful service you provide."

"Thank you for providing this service, which sold my boots in 1 week!"

"I have sold my last pair of Easyboots, so can you please remove my ad from your website? Thank you so much for providing this service - I received numerous responses and all transactions went well without a hitch."

"Gretchen ~ I have sold all sizes of Boa Boots.  My listing is dated 11/29/07.  I can't thank you enough for you letting us use your web site.  I now have enough money after selling the boots to purchase new ones in the correct size for my new horse."

"Wow, they sold really fast.  Thanks again."

"Hi Gretchen.  When I told a friend I sold my boots so fast, she asked me to list hers!   Thanks!!"

After you have sold your boots, or found what you were looking for, please  EMAIL ME so I can take your notice down!

If an ad you contacted is no longer available, please  EMAIL ME!

I have been cleaning house on this page recently.
All ads more than 2 months old have been deleted, unless people asked me to keep them up after I emailed everybody.  I have also deleted ads with bouncing email addresses, and emailed everyone with ads older than a month.  A lot of people wrote back that they had already bought or sold the boots they had wanted to, so I took these ads down.  (This resulted in about 1/3 of the ads coming down on Oct. 19, 2004.)  Ads with the first line (Buy/sell/swap:) in green were reconfirmed in mid-August, 2008 as still being current, or were put up thereafter.  Ads with the first line (Buy/sell/swap:) in teal were reconfirmed in mid-September, 2008 as still being current, or were put up thereafter.

The newest ads are at the bottom of the page.  My approach in the past was to not take ads down unless the people asked me to.  Since there was so much dead wood from people not remembering to do this after their boots sold, I will limit the length of time ads will run in the future, unless someone asks me to keep an ad up longer when I recheck them all periodically.  If when I recheck periodically and I don't hear back from you, or email to you bounces, your ad will come down.  I admit I haven't always been rechecking the ads often enough, although I am trying to do it more often now.  It's a lot of hassle for a free service...

Fraud prevention for online transactions--

PayPal www.paypal.com offers some fraud protection, and the fees are relatively lower (sellers are charged 2.9% plus 30 cents for transactions within the US; 3.9% plus 30-55 cents for foreign transactions.  Foreign currency conversions are also handled automatically by PayPal, which is certainly cheaper and more convenient than getting international money orders from your bank, or trying to deposit foreign payments into your bank account.)  Setting up a PayPal account is quick and simple.  PayPal will let you know when a payment has actually cleared; then you can ship out.

If you sell something using PayPal, be sure to keep a tracking number to prove you shipped it.  Sending something out with no tracking number is riskier; you cannot prove you shipped anything out.  If you accept a personal check, wait for it to clear before shipping anything out.  It IS possible to get charge-backs from Pay Pal.  If you can't prove you sent the package out because you don't have a tracking number, and the buyer says it never arrived, you could lose your money through a PayPal charge-back.  If the buyer claims their PayPal account was used by someone not authorized to use it (such as one of their children), a charge-back is also possible.  This is a problem PayPal realizes needs to be corrected, though.

If you buy something, paying through PayPal, it never arrives, and the shipper cannot prove to PayPal that it was shipped out to you with a tracking number...you can get your account credited.  (This is called a charge-back.)

A common problem lately is for a buyer to send you a fraudulent cashier's check. The fraud is not caught until the cashier's check gets back to the issuing bank. Your local bank will probably not catch that it is phony right away.

Another scam to watch for is when they offer to overpay for something to be shipped overseas, and ask you to pay their shipper (also overseas) out of the overpayment...usually through payment methods that are not traceable, like a Western Union money order.  This is money laundering, and/or their check will bounce.

If you pay for something with a money order, keep a Xerox copy of the money order so you have enough information to get documentation later from the issuing bank that the seller has cashed it.

If someone claims they mailed you money, but you never received anything, ask them to provide documentation that their check or money order has been paid out to you.  If they can't provide documentation, find another buyer who isn't playing games...

I merely offer a place where boot buyers and sellers get together.  It is open to all, and I don't know most of the people who are using this page, so I can't accept responsibility for how anyone using this page acts.  I also make an effort to put the information up accurately, but I don't want to be held responsible for any errors.

Common boot sizes:
Width is widest part of the hoof.  Length is from toe to the backs of the heels, but NOT heel bulbs.  You are measuring a footprint.
